A new Baby in Island of Happiness

I mentioned the birth of my son in the previous post with reference to two of the rival Weddings, but what mother would not wish to brag a little about the birth of her child? I think it merits a post of its own. The fact that many players share my intense interest in Vaughn as a prospective Spouse gives me more reason to devote a post to the Birth Event in Island of Happiness.

If you keep your Spouse at 10 hearts and expand your house to the largest Extra Large Size, you will find a Kid's Bed at Chen's Market a full season after your Wedding. Buy it instantly if you wish to experience the Pregnancy Event the next morning. If you do not purchase the crib, you will not become pregnant!

The earliest the Pregnancy Event can occur therefore is a full season after Marriage. After the Pregnancy Event, the birth of your Child will follow after two full seasons. The actual date will depend on any intervening Events that occur in the same week, such as Rival Weddings or Festivals. My own Child was due to be born on 10 Spring by my calculations but by experiencing two of the final Rival Heart Events at the beginning of Spring, the Calendar had to change to accommodate them.

The birth of my son occurred only after both of the Rival Weddings had been celebrated, on 11 Spring.

On 10 Spring, after the second Rival wedding of Pierre and Julia:
Vaughn: The baby should be coming soon. Be prepared!

11 Spring:

New Family

Vaughn is pacing back and forth in front of Mirabelle.

Mirabelle: Stop pacing around. A man needs to keep himself calm during times like these.

He ignores her and continues to pace relentlessly.

Mirabelle: It’s okay! Freya will give birth to a healthy baby.

Vaughn: How can I not be concerned now?!

Dr. Trent: (unseen): Keep pushing… Come on! A little harder!

Vaughn: (!) Hang in there, Tesora… I wish there was something I could do to ease her pain.

Mirabelle: (…) Yes, all we can do is wait. I’m sure that everything’ll turn out just fine!

The cry of a newborn infant rings out clearly, then:

A baby is in the infant bed above the Husband Bed.

Dr. Trent: Thanks to Felicia’s help, the baby was born safely.
Congratulations, Freya. It’s a healthy baby boy.

Mirabelle: What a brave-looking child!

Felicia: You did very well, Freya.

Vaughn: Is the baby?
Our baby?

Vaughn: Hey, let’s name the baby.
Any ideas, honey?

After you have chosen the name, your character will display a big red heart.
You only are allowed six letters.

Vaughn: Attila, eh?
Good name.
I like it.

Vaughn: Tesoro, Attila and I are a family now.
Having a new family member makes me so happy.

I nod.

My thoughts: It just sank in… I’m a mother! Attila, I’m so glad you were born!

No time passes here…
It is 6.00 a.m. still after the birth.
Go to the baby bed and tap on it.
The baby will cry and you will see a prompt:
‘I hope our baby grows up well!’

Having a Child truly a Matter of Choice in IoH

In many Harvest Moon games, if you have your spouse at maximum heart level for a specific period of time, a blessed event will be announced and you WILL have a child.
Island of Happiness is different in this respect.

You can marry with a Large House and a Big Bed, but you never will have a child if you do not order the Extra-Large House. Even then, you will not have a child if you do not buy the Child's Bed.

The 'Kid's Bed' will be available at Chen's Market a full season after marriage, provided you have an Extra-Large House. You have to BUY it if you wish to experience the pregnancy event.

This makes having a child a matter of choice. Furthermore, you can engineer the birthday of your child by putting off the purchase.

The morning after the purchase, you will experience the Pregnancy Event, entitled:
'The Big News'.

If any one wonders about Vaughn's suitability as a husband, this Event proves it. He SHINES here. When Trent asks him if MY decision to have the baby on the island is acceptable, Vaughn responds that it is only my opinion that matters! What a sweetheart! The taciturn Vaughn demonstrates a complete lack of obnoxious machismo, deferring to the person who actually will have to go through labour.

The Event is interesting for a number of reasons. There is a point where you may believe that you have a choice as to where to have the baby, that you may be able to visit the Clinic at Mineral Town or Hardy's Clinic in the Valley perhaps...

The matter is taken out of your hands, though, when your character declares the intention of having the child on the Island instead of the 'hospital' recommended by Dr. Trent.

Incidentally, Trent will be available for this Event whatever the season. He happens to be 'on the island' gathering medicinal herbs whenever you become pregnant, even if ordinarily he would be back in Mineral Town.

Note that the pregnancy event can occur as early as one season after marriage.

The Big News

At 6.00 a.m.
Me: (with black cloud)
Vaughn: (?) What’s wrong? You’ve looked under the weather for a while now… Especially today.
I’ll go find a doctor. Sit tight, okay?

I nod.
He walks out.

Now Trent is here with Vaughn.

Vaughn: A Doctor was on the island picking medicinal plants.
So, how’s Freya?

Trent: Hmm…
Me: (…)
Trent: (…)
Trent: A-ha! Precisely. There’s nothing to worry about. You haven’t fallen ill…

Vaughn and I both: (?)

Trent: You’re pregnant!

Vaughn and I both: (!)

Trent; Congratulations, both of you!

Me (with big red heart)

Vaughn: Really?! I’m gonna be a dad?
Never thought the day would come, me as a parent.
Great, eh, Tesora?

Trent: Now, where would you like to deliver the baby?

Vaughn and I both: (?)

Trent: I’m glad I was here to assist you with the diagnosis.
You should stay in a hospital in a town for the delivery.
I shake my head negatively.
Me: (…)
Trent: Oh, you’d like to deliver the baby here on the island?

I nod with vigour.

Trent: Is that all right with you, Vaughn?

Vaughn: Sure. It’s only Tesora’s choice that matters here.

I display another big red heart.

Trent: If that’s what you wish, I’d be happy to assist.
When you go into labour, make sure to call me. I’ll rush over immediately.

Vaughn: That’d help us a lot.
Thanks again. We’ll be seeing you.

Trent: it’s no trouble. Se sure not to strain yourself. Now, I should get going.

For all Harvest Moon fans and players

As Freyashawk, I have written about 150 guides for games, most of which have been guides for Harvest Moon games. These are published on IGN. IGN has given me the title of 'Mistress of Harvest Moon' and I strive daily to earn the right to maintain that title. Although there is a link page on IGN that lists all the guides published there, they are not organised by game, but rather given in alphabetical order. I therefore created this page in order to provide links to the guides I have created for each Harvest Moon game. If you access the General Guide for any game, links should be included to all other guides for that game in a section at the end. I will try to add links to ALL guides as time permits, but until I do, you always can refer to my user page at IGN for the complete list.

How to Use my Guides

I write three different basic types of game guides. I usually write a General Guide for every game, which is fairly comprehensive and deals with all aspects of the game. It may or may not be in the form of a Walkthrough, dealing with game aspects as they occur. My Innocent Life General Guide is an example of a General Guide that is organised as a Walkthrough.

After writing a General Comprehensive Guide, I often write a Calendar Guide giving birthday and festival dates, with additional information that may be helpful, such as favourite gifts for each individual. For all Harvest Moon games, I usually write a number of 'mini-guides', such as Events Guides for each year of gameplay, or Recipe Guides that give all recipes one can make. Fishing, Mining, Shipping or Item Value Guides are other mini-guides that can be very useful when playing Harvest Moon. Character Guides give detailed information about every character in any specific game. My Courtship and Marriage Guide is devoted to all aspects of Courtship and Marriage, including schedules of Heart Events, Rival Heart Events and the likes and dislikes of every Eligible Girl and/or Bachelor.

Although this site is devoted to Harvest Moon, I have included links to game guides for other games. I created a separate link section for Animal Crossing Wild World as well, because I wrote more than one guide for that game.

N.B. All my game guides are published by IGN. This webpage has been created simply to allow players to find links to all my guides more easily.

Copyright Infringement Warning

It is really sad to discover that there are individuals who are willing to steal my guides and to attempt to publish them under their names. Fortunately, there are many players who recognise my guides when they see them anywhere on the internet and who are willing to alert me when some one tries to steal my material. I want to thank all those players for their help in these cases.

Some one stole one of my guides and tried to publish it on Gamefaqs under his/her name. The guide has been removed and the poster has been banned. I now have a contact in the Legal Department at CNet. I spend many months sometimes writing a guide. They are available for the private use of any individual without cost, but they are not available for theft!

Friends of Mineral Town and More Friends of Mineral Town

You will notice that I wrote far more guides for More Friends of Mineral Town than I did for the original 'Friends of Mineral Town'. At some point, I would like to publish more specific Events Guides for Friends of Mineral Town, but players should be aware of the fact that ALL Calendar Events Guides for MFoMT can be used when playing the original FoMT. The Events are the same in most cases in both games. If, therefore, you are playing FoMT and you wish to know the events that can be experienced in the third year of gameplay, refer to the 'Third Year Calendar Events Guide' for 'More Friends of Mineral Town'.
